It goes ding when there's stuff!

My name is Ashley. I'm 25 years old. I'm seriously, clinically, obsessed with Doctor Who. I haven't been this obsessed with anything since Animorphs (which I still love). I'm getting ready to go back to school and finish my B.S. in Mathematics, with a minor in Physics. After that, I'll be in grad school.

Along with my love for math and science, I embrace the mystical side of things. I love symbols and signs. I like to read about miracles and supernatural experience.

Your body is made of the same elements that lionesses are built from. Three quarters of you is the same kind of water that beats rocks to rubble, wears stones away. Your DNA translates into the same twenty amino acids that wolf genes code for. When you look in the mirror and feel weak, remember, the air you breathe in fuels forest fires capable of destroying everything they touch. On the days you feel ugly, remember: diamonds are only carbon. You are so much more.

Corundum, also affectionately referred to as sapphire, is a rock-forming mineral composed of aluminum oxide, and is mined from alluvial deposits. It’s gorgeous on its own natural and unpolished, so there’s no wonder that we have found ways to cut and shape it to our liking.

All of these specimens can be seen in the Grainger Hall of Gems.

  • Sapphire crystal on matrix, from Madagascar
  • Natural sapphire crystal from Kashmir, India
  • Faceted sapphires from Sri Lanka
  • Edwardian carved sapphire and diamonds set in platinum pendant - 60.2-carat sapphire
